The client’s requirements for this new house, built on the site of their existing home constructed over 40 years ago, was to preserve the original columns and structure. The original house design was modern, designed in the era when living areas where essentially encompassed by solid walls with few openings. A survey concluded that were some doubts about the soundness of the existing structure and this was not able be retained. The challenge of maintaining the original structural layout was therefore addressed by designing a new structure based on the original grid. With the updated ambience of an A49HD signature design, the new residence was brought into the modern era.
This house design focused on addressed
the issues of the existing structure and a new layout to make it more
functional rather than aiming to showcase aesthetics. One of the issues that
arose was the indoor swimming pool at the center of the house. This was
originally designed to be housed indoors as the owners were averse to
mosquitoes and insects. However, due to the original design’s lack of adequate
ventilation, the space had become damp and musty which needed to be addressed.
The original enclosed building design resulted in very little natural light
reaching the interiors. The rooms were dark with limited views of the outside
due to this enclosed layout.
Improving lighting and ventilation were
therefore the key issues to be addressed. The new design sought to take
advantage of the surrounding environment as the house was located adjacent to a
golf course. Thus, the existing fencing was removed, opening a panoramic view
of the golf course with a small canal to mark the boundary.
Two brothers’ families reside in this
house along with their mother, the pillar of the extended family. They all
enjoy close relationships, but at the same time each family values its privacy.
Zoning was created with the mother as the center with common areas realigned to
meet this new dynamic. Each family has their own private residence with the
individual interiors designed to reflect their personal styles.
The central indoor pool remains an
integral and important part of the shared space, along with the garden with its
new, improved scenery. The pool area was also redesigned to allow light and
breeze in during the day and to be closed at night to keep insects out. This is
a well-loved living space which now also incorporates the mother’s recreation
area, the family television room and a dining area, effectively blurring the
lone between indoor and outdoor of a safe, air-conditioned environment in all
living areas. Overall, the design has created a unique character fir this
residence.
The design of this house is based on a
box in concept with each family unit, or box space, arranged around a central
box. This central box, housing three elements of light, wind and water, can be
likened to the heart of the residence. It is the most loved family space and a
connection between all areas of the house. This beacon of
light makes its surroundings even more interesting as the house is located
adjacent to a golf course. Just as city lights look magically captivating when
seen from afar, this beacon evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity in those who
see it. Wire mesh to keep insects out is concealed by timber slats and topped
with clear glass. This allows light and breeze into the building while offering
protection from the rain. From am isometric section view, the swimming pool is
like a jewel in the heart of the home.
Each family had their own tastes and preference in
décor and it was therefore challenging to design all three styles in one
residence. This was especially relevant when presenting the design of the
common area (public zone) to the client.
The interior décor in the mother’s area
is designed in a cozy, modern style. Earth tones were chosen for wall and
ceiling finishing, coupled with dark wood paneling, creating a cozy,
comfortable ambience.
The elder son is a fan of the modern
classic style. The interior of his family’s quarters is decorated with moldings
featuring additional detailed design elements, such as a marble mix and
stainless brass trims. A selection of classic furniture completes the look.
A modern loft design in dark tones
reflects the younger son’s preference. Raw finished materials such as, metal,
wood, and special cement paint were selected to decorate the space. Black
marble with white veins assists in creating a delectable interior.
